Practice
 
Steve concentrates his practice in the areas of environmental, natural resources, energy and land use law, with particular emphasis on project permitting, regulatory compliance, defense of enforcement actions and evaluating environmental issues in real estate, natural resource and business transactions. He also assists clients with water rights, timber, minerals, water and air quality, and hazardous waste matters. Steve works with a variety of clients including lenders, private utilities, recreational resorts, state and local government, and private industry. Prior to joining Garlington, Lohn and Robinson, Steve practiced for several years with the Stoel Rives firm in Portland, Oregon. He was admitted to practice in 1989 (Oregon) and 1994 (Montana). Steve also is admitted to practice in Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Court. 

Professional Activities
 
Steve is a regular speaker at various environmental seminars. He teaches several natural resource courses as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Montana School of Law. While in law school, Steve was the Articles Editor for the journal “Environmental Law.” He has authored articles in the journals “Environmental Law” and the “Harvard Environmental Law Review.” His professional memberships include the Environmental and Natural Resources Sections of the Montana and Oregon bars, and the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (SEER). He recently completed a two year term as chair of the SEER Water Quality and Wetlands Committee.

Education and Interests
 
Whitworth College (B.S., geology, 1983) and Northwestern School of Law of Lewis and Clark College (J.D., cum laude, 1989; Certificate in Environmental & Natural Resources Law). Steve’s interests include skiing, whitewater sports, running, traveling, photography, soccer and bicycling. Before law school, Steve worked for several years in Yellowstone Park and as a professional ski patrol.
